Actress Kangana Ranaut has voiced her concerns regarding the prevalent obsession with fair skin tone in the entertainment industry, stating that many Indian actresses now “look pale,” resembling white women. She pointed out the lack of representation of dark, dusky Indian female actors in showbiz.
Kangana Ranaut raises concerns about skin tone
Taking to her Instagram Stories, Kangana Ranaut shared her thoughts on Monalisa, a young woman who has gone viral for her natural beauty and skin tone during the Maha Kumbh Mela. Kangana expressed her disappointment over the harassment Monalisa faced for photos and interviews, questioning why there seems to be a scarcity of dusky-toned actresses in the current glamour landscape.
In her story, Kangana wrote: “This young girl Monalisa has become an internet sensation for her natural beauty. As much as I hate people harassing her for pictures and interviews, I can’t help but think, do we have dark dusky Indian tone female representation in the glamour world anymore? Are people loving young actresses how they loved Anu Agarwal, Kajol, Bipasha, Deepika, or Rani Mukerji?”

She further questioned: “Why do all actresses look as pale as a white woman, including those who were dark in their younger days? Why don’t people identify newcomers the way they identify with Monalisa? Too much laser and glutathione injections?”
Who is Monalisa?
Monalisa Bhonsle, a garland seller from Indore, captured significant attention at Maha Kumbh 2025 for her striking looks. Unfortunately, she faced harassment from men eager for selfies after her rise to fame. This incident led her family to send her home for her safety.
Kangana’s recent project
On a different note, Kangana was recently seen in Emergency, a film she also directed. In this biographical political thriller, she portrayed the late former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It focused on the last years of her tenure, including the Emergency and Operation Bluestar. The film, released on January 17, received mixed-to-negative reviews and did not perform well at the box office.
